 Details: To discuss the origin of the name Rajshahi, we have to go back a few centuries. The ancient name of this city was Mahakal Garh. Later it was transformed into Rampur-Boalia. There is no clear explanation of how the name Rajshahi originated from Rampur-Boalia. There is no mention of any town or place called Rajshahi in the early history of the British period. Many people think that this town was once ruled by many Hindus, Muslims, kings, sultans, and zamindars, so it was named Rajshahi. According to the historian Brockmann (Bolch Mann), the name Rajshahi originates from the time of the conquest of the Muslim Sultanate of Gaur in the 15th century AD by Raja Ganesh Katrik, the zamindar of Bhaturia in this district.

 Hindu Raj and Persian Shahi are the combinations of these two words. But Beveridge, objecting to Blockman’s opinion, says that as a name, Arbachin is less than Rajshahi and its location was far from Bhaturia Pargana, the zamindari of King Ganesha. If the name originated during the reign of King Ganesha, it must have been mentioned in the tribute collection list prepared by Todarmal or in Ain-i-Akbari by Abul Fazl. According to W. W. Hunter, the zamindari of Raja Ramjivan of Natore was known as Rajshahi and that is the name adopted by the British for the district.

 Many people do not consider these explanations to be accurate history. However, the historical fact is that, from 1700 to 1725, Nawab Mushird Quli Khan divided the entire Bangladesh into 13 (thirteen) chakras for the convenience of revenue collection. Out of which a large expansion area called ‘Charula Rajshahi’ is determined. He named the Padma flowing between them ‘Rajshahi Chakla’ with the present-day Rajshahi in the north and Murshidabad in the south and the other part as Rajshahi Nij Chakla. At first, the revenue of the entire chakra was collected by the Hindu prince-landlord Uday Narayan. He was a personal favorite of Murshid Quli. For which the Nawab gave him the title of Raja.

 The vast area called Dakshin Chakla Rajshahi, which included the whole of Rajshahi and parts of Pabna, was settled by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan in 1714 to Ramjivan of Nature. This zamindari later came under the rule of Queen Bhavani of Natore and extended over many territories. When Ramjivan I, the king of Natore, died in 1730, his adopted son Ramkant became the king. After Ramakanta’s death in 1751, his wife Bhavani Devi was succeeded by Rani Bhavani. According to many, this chakra was named Rajshahi by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan out of love for the first king Uday Narayan. But according to historian Akshay Kumar Maitreya, Rani Bhavani’s given name was Rajshahi. However, Mr. Grant writes that Rani Bhavani’s zamindari was called Rajshahi and the name Rajshahi is mentioned during the settlement of this Chakla.
