It is purely a civilian force and Battalion Ansar is a paramilitary force. Both Ansar and Battalion Ansar are law enforcement agencies tasked with public security under the Ministry of Interior’s Public Security Division.
Note that the battalion is the regular force of the Ansar government. Nomenclature: a. The first version of the name ‘Ansar Bahini’ was the British Indian ‘Home Guard’. The anti-British popular uprising led to the collapse of ‘British rule in the Indian subcontinent and thus the British government formed the ‘Home Guard’ in India, including the then East Bengal, in 1946. Sacrifice in Liberation War: 670 martyrs including 9 officers and 661 Ansar members. The Pakistani government disbanded the Ansar Bahini on 2 August 1971 as the entire force joined the Liberation War. And instead of being ‘Ansar’, they formed ‘Razakar’ through a wartime ordinance on August 2, 1971. Gallantry Awards: After independence, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman awarded gallantry awards to Ansar freedom fighters: one ‘Bir Bikram’ and two ‘Bir Prateek’ and re-established the Ansar Bahini.
